After coming out of retirement on Nov. 1, 2002 after a
three-year layoff, she finished the year with 20 victories
and purses of $814,473 from 133 mounts. Sidelined
temporarily this spring after a March 8 accident at the
starting gate in which she sustained three compressed
vertebrae in her mid-back and fractures of two transverse
process bones in her lower back. Returned to competition in
July of 2003 and finished second in the Del Mar standings
with 49 winners in 43 days, and led Del Mar standings with
earnings of $2.7 million. Led all Del Mar jockeys with eight
stakes wins.
- First woman rider to be inducted into the Racing
Hall of Fame, in 2000.
- First woman rider to win a Triple Crown race, taking
the 1993 Belmont Stakes with Colonial Affair. She is the
only woman to ever ride in the Belmont Stakes. She has
ridden in four additional Belmont Stakes (1991, 1992,
1995 and 1996).
- In 14 Breeders' Cup rides, has had two second-place
finishes, with Darby Shuffle in the 1988 Juvenile
Fillies and Mr. Greeley in the 1995 Sprint.
- Top mounts in 2003 have included Candy Ride (Pacific
Classic) and Halfbridled (Del Mar Debutante Stakes).
- First woman rider to take a title at a major North
American track. She has led the jockey standings at
Monmouth Park, Meadowlands, Gulfstream Park, Belmont
Park and Atlantic City.
- First female jockey in Oak Tree history to ride five
winners in a day, on Oct. 4, 2003.
- Battled back from a near-fatal race accident at
Saratoga on Aug. 30, 1993.
- Retired in 1999 with 3,545 wins, ranking 16th in
earnings on the all-time list for all riders, with more
than $81 million in purses.
Moved to Southern California and worked as a commentator
for TVG and Hollywood Park telecasts.

Scored her first win on Feb. 12, 1981 on Lord Farkle at

On October 25, 2003 Julie Krone became the
first female jockey to ever win a Breeders' Cup race aboard
Halfbridled in the Juvenile Fillies.
