I have fallen off more times than I can count. The worst one i ever had however, was on my stud. He was only four and i had him at his first cutting competition. A friend and I got boasting about our horses and we ended up racing. Mine smelled a mare and freaked. He threw me off then turned around and started stomping on me.
It poped both my hips out of socket, I broke four ribs, and poped both my shoulders out of socket. He busted up my riding helmet to...good thing I was wearing one or I might not be here. I do not blame him though, it was my fault and I am still competing him 7 year slater.

I came off 2 times in 10 minutes...broke my tail bone and hurt my pride big time! Couldn't get on a horse for 8 weeks after that!

My worst fall was October of 2005.
i had just gotten my mare a couple days ago and really wanted to take her for a ride
We dont have many trails so we went for what i call a 'road ride'
Anyways, i was riding over to show my 'at the time boyfriend' my new horse and a truck back fired (my mare was a race horse 5 years prior) and my horse took off!!!!!!!!! she slipped sideways in the road and landed on my leg. luckily i kicked my feet out of the stirrups so i wasnt caught up or anything (i dont remember much past the act of my horse falling)
i ended up with 10 staples in my head, a horrible concussion, and road rash head to toe.
my mare ended up with a gash on her elbow from her back hoof coming forward and slicing her as well as some road rash.
i looked at my saddle a couple days later and noticed the top of my saddle horn was scuffed

I can remember it like it was yesterday. I was 17 and was getting my horse ready for the 3-Day at Essex, NJ. We were galloping in a plowed field, and he began getting strong, so I halted him and backed him. He didn't care for that, so he reared and fell over on me. I jumped up after seeing I was alive, and went to chase after him.

I've fallen off/been bucked off more times than I can remember! Although it hasn't happened in a very long time. It mostly happened more when I was younger. I was riding my friends horse when I was first learning (before I had one of my own,I think I was 14 ish) He was very green and I was bucked of at least three times that day alone before I was too sore to continue. I've never had anything too tragic happen mostly just bumps and bruises..

20 YEARS AGO, MY ARABIAN MARE REARED UP AND FLIPPED OVER BACKWARDS ON TOP OF ME. I LAY IN A FIELD FOR 45 MINUTES BEFORE ANYONE FOUND ME. MY FEMUR WAS CRUSHED WHERE THE SADDLE LANDED ON TOP OF ME. I WAS IN THE HOSPITAL FOR 10 DAYS AFTER A 12 HR. SURGERY TO PUT MY LEG BACK TOGETHER. ONE YEAR AND 2 MONTHS LATER, I GOT BACK ON THAT SAME MARE. AND HAVE BEEN RIDING EVER SINCE. IF HORSES ARE WHO YOU ARE, NOTHING WILL KEEP YOU FROM RIDING AND LOVING THEM.

I just had a really bad fall yesterday. I was riding a huge saddlebred that id probably 17hh. I was riding past a door and somebody opened it and he spooked and I lost my stirup. I sort of slid so I was on his side and he decided that i wasn't going to stay on and he bolted and I fell off. My helmet hit my glasses which bent and hit me in the eye. So now I have a black eye and I can't turn my head or move without being in pain. That was really my first fall. But I sort of fell off 2 other times.

Bull or Horse? Horse...I was on a horse (Bubba) that I broke a while a go and I was ridin in the arena and another one of the horses got loose in the arena while I was ridin him around, and he got frightened and started bucking and they started fightin while I was still on. Then Bubba fell to the side of the fence and he got back up and I was on the ground and Bubba took off and kicked me in the head...I was in a coma for a 3 days.
Bull...I was ridin a bull for the first time and I rode all 3.4 seconds and i fell to his side and my hand was still in the rope and i couldnt get loose. When Chocolate boy turned his head back, he gored me in the ribs and then i fell under him and he stepped on me. An thats about all i can remember.

I had a bad fall the wind blew up the saddle blanket and he thru me off and i held on to the reins and it ricocheted me under him and he stood on my face it took all the skin off my top lip and my teeth went thru my lip as well. The doctor told me i was luck he didn't put all his weight down as i would have a lot of broken bones and if he had shoes i could of lost my nose.

Well, since my last post, I've had a few more falls. Kinda happens when you are at an Equestrian school...it's all part of the learning experience. LOL. I've had a total of six more falls, and several close calls. I'd have to say that there is a three way tie for first place for my worst fall. The other three weren't that bad ( two were an equipment malfunction...saddle slipped, the other I landed on my feet when the horse did a rollback out from under me...did I mention I ride Dressage?)
So, the three way tie... First one: Riding Traveler, and old, sway-backed, retired Amish cart horse, on the lunge line. I was working on my rising trot (posting trot, for those not at Meredith Manor) and Traveler kinda stumbled a bit. When he brought his head up to keep his balance, he knocked me in the face with his neck. I lost my balance and was trying not to sit down on him too hard (sway backed). Didn't work. He didn't like it, so he popped his butt up in the air and I took a short flying lesson...landing on my back with one arm on the lunge line. I had a bruise on the back of my arm the size of a 3 X 5 card, and a sore back for a couple of days. Second one: Riding Lilly, a Belgin Draft who had better get her own way. It was my second time on her. The warm up went ok. Then my instructor asked us to trot. Lilly didn't like that so she took off in a canter. Just like everything else about Lilly (except for her name) it was HUGE! I got bounced out of my saddle to the point of sitting half on the pommel/ half on her neck. I was trying to push myself off her neck, but her thick, silky, long mane wouldn't let me. So, Lilly decided to put on the breaks. Again, flying lesson, landing on belly this time. Then, when I pushed my self up, I sat back on my heels...and... I forgot I had spurs on. Oops. Third: Riding Lady Ace of Hearts, a reigner in training. I was riding for one of the teaching students. She was teaching Spins. I ride Dressage, so I thought it would be a good experience to learn to ride some of the Western movements. Lesson was going fine (considering there was a jumping lesson going on at the same time). The jumping lesson was finished and they were leaving. First horse got spooked by something outside, stated backing up, bumped into the second and kicked it. Second horse rears. The horse I'm on just stands there. Where's the bad part you ask? Well, about 15 seconds AFTER the gate closed, which was about 30 seconds AFTER this whole kicking/rearing thing finished, my horse decides that she needs to be scared and does a roll back out from under me. I landed on the small of my back. I couldn't ride for three days, nor could I stand up straight for about five days. Also had a bruise the size of an orange on the inside of my knee. Someone said that first I landed on my back, then I bounced, then landed on my side, smacking my knees together. I was pretty sore after all three of them, especially after sitting back on my spurs...LOL! It has been a while since I have fallen/been thrown, but I guess that since I have written this, I will probably fall off sometime in the next week or so. I'll let ya know if it's a bad one. |

Well, I was right. Last post was May 4th. On May 17th I took another falling lesson. I said about a week or so...I was only one day short of two weeks :) . This fall I can blame on another instructor. There was only three riders in my class, me and two other people. In the next arena over, there was only one. So my instructor and the other decided to join classes. The other instructor brought her student over to the arena I was riding in. She was in such a hurry that she flung the gate open. The horse that her student was on decided that she was done, did a roll back and took off cantering. She stayed on. The horse that I was riding spooked, not sure if it was because of the gate being flung open or the other horse's actions, and she took off cantering. I have never cantered this horse before as she is just out of training, and she (depending on which way she is going) either counter canters or cross canters, either way is very uncomfortable on her. I was doing pretty good at staying on....till I got to the first corner. In the turn, my inside foot came out of the stirrup. And she did something very funny with her rump, causing my saddle to start slipping to the outside. By the time I made the second turn, I was hanging on with my lower leg across the little mare's back. Half way down the long side, I couldn't hang on any more. Now, if I had only held on for about 2 more seconds, I would have landed in the soft center of the arena since she dove in off the rail. No...not me. I landed, shoulder and head first in the track along the wall. Injuries from fall - Strained pectoral muscle, bruised rib, fractured rib, strained muscles in shoulder and neck. Oh, and a bruised/scraped knee and ripped breeches from trying to get back on. The little mare decided she wasn't going to stand still, took a step towards me and pushed me off the "mounting block" (old broken dressage letter). I caught the corner of it just above my right knee and have a four inch bruise on my knee with matching rip on my breeches. The ONLY external mark!

I've only fell off twice. But I've only been riding for 2 and a half years soooo yea. The worst of the 2 was when i was a very beggner rider like when i was riding for 7 months. The horse started to lope off crazily and made a crazy sharp turns. off I went! I landed on my side and he was like 16hh or something. It hurt like crazy.

i have fallen off quite a bit but never gotten hurt very badly , probably the worst fall i ever had was when my i was cantering up a big steep hill that had black berries at the top and my horse decided to buck and she doesn't normally buck but she did and i wasn't expecting it anyway i went flying off into a big blackberry bush. i was fine just a little bruised and scratched.
